The counting of votes for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Elections 2026 officially began on May 4, 2026 across Tamil Nadu. The Election Commission has made extensive arrangements to ensure a smooth, transparent, and secure counting process throughout the state.
This large-scale counting operation covers votes recorded from 75,064 polling stations along with postal ballots received from eligible voters.
Counting Centres Across Tamil Nadu
For the 2026 Assembly Elections, vote counting is being conducted at:
62 designated counting centres
234 counting halls for EVM counting
240 additional halls for Postal Ballot and ETPB counting
3,324 counting tables arranged statewide
The counting process is supervised carefully by Returning Officers (ROs) and Assistant Returning Officers (AROs).
Massive Election Workforce Deployed
To maintain transparency and efficiency:
10,545 counting personnel have been assigned
4,624 micro observers deployed
234 Counting Observers appointed by the Election Commission of India
Each Assembly Constituency has a dedicated observer monitoring the process to ensure strict adherence to election guidelines.
Postal Ballot Counting Arrangements
Special attention has been given to postal ballot counting.
One counting table has been arranged for every 500 postal ballots
1,135 additional Assistant Returning Officers have been deployed specifically for postal ballot verification and counting
Three-Tier Security System at Counting Centres
The Election Commission has implemented a strong three-layer security system across all counting venues.
1. Outer Security Layer
Security perimeter established within 100 metres around counting centres
Entry allowed only for authorised personnel
Police deployed for ID verification and frisking
2. Middle Security Layer
State Armed Police guarding entry gates
Strict movement control inside premises
Mobile phones permitted only in authorised zones
3. Inner Security Layer
Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) guarding counting halls and EVM strong rooms
Strict checking to prevent prohibited items inside counting halls
Additionally, 65 CAPF companies have been deployed throughout Tamil Nadu for enhanced security.
QR Code-Based Entry System Introduced
For the first time, the Election Commission introduced a QR code-based Photo Identity verification system through ECINET.
This advanced system helps prevent unauthorised entry into counting centres.
QR-based identity cards are mandatory for:
Returning Officers
Assistant Returning Officers
Counting staff
Technical staff
Candidates
Election agents
Counting agents
Entry is permitted only after successful QR code verification.
Counting Timings
The counting process started as follows:
8:00 AM – Postal Ballot counting
8:30 AM – EVM counting
Round-wise results are being announced by Returning Officers through public address systems at counting centres.
