Tamil Nadu's Journey to WorldSkills Shanghai 2026

Tamil Nadu's Journey to World Skills Shanghai 2026

WorldSkills, known as the "Olympics of Skills, is the global benchmark for vocational excellence, where the finest young skilled professionals from around the world compete across a wide range of vocational and technical skills. Held every two years, it offers a global platform to demonstrate excellence, innovation and professional skills against international standards. Tamil Nadu's international benchmark in skills competition was set at the World Skills Competition 2022 Special Edition, where 6 competitors from Tamil Nadu in India's contingent secured 1 Bronze Medal and 2 Medallions of Excellence. At World Skills 2024 in Lyon, France, 3 candidates from Tamil Nadu represented India. These outcomes formed the baseline for strengthening the State's skills competition ecosystem through TN Skills. TN Skills was designed not merely as a competition but as a talent identification and progression mechanism. It followed a structured pathway from registration through Level 1 (District), Level 2 (Region) and the State Level Competition, leading to the India Skills Regional Competition, India Skills Nationals Competition and WorldSkills Competition.

A total of 53,273 candidates registered from Tamil Nadu. The TN State Level Competition identified high performing candidates in each of the 63 skills to represent Tamil Nadu at the next stages, with each level progressively filtering and strengthening the talent pool. This pathway translated into measurable outcomes. In the India Skills Regional Competitions 2026 conducted in Hyderabad, Tamil Nadu secured 1st position with a total of 108 medals, indicating strong performance across multiple skill categories. The state has demonstrated a consistent upward trajectory in India Skills National Competitions, improving from 10th position in 2021 with 23 medals, to 3rd position in 2024 with 40 medals, and further to 2nd position in 2026 with 46 medals, with a corresponding increase in medal counts. At the international level, the state has also contributed to India's representation, with three candidates from Tamil Nadu participating in the WorldSkills Asia 2025, held in Taiwan, achieving two medal successes. During the Taipei Capital Cup 2026 WorldSkills Competition event, held in Taiwan, three of the five candidates selected from India were from Tamil Nadu. One candidate from Tamil Nadu won a silver medal and two candidates got merit awards in their respective skills. At the international level, Tamil Nadu sent its largest ever contingent of 12 candidates to the WorldSkills Competition 2026 held between 22nd September 2026 to 27th September 2026 in Shanghai, representing India across different skills. The contingent secured 1 Silver Medal and 4 Medal for Excellence, a total of 5 international recognitions, also marking Tamil Nadu's first Silver Medal at WorldSkills. Team India won 6 Silver Medals and 20 Medal for Excellence, its best medal tally at WorldSkills. India also climbed to 10th place in the global rankings, its highest ever ranking on the world stage. The List of medal winners, and the skill they represented is furnished hereunder:

Tamil Nadu's journey demonstrates the evolution of skills competition from mass participation at the grassroots level to measurable regional, national and international outcomes. The achievement at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 is an important milestone in Tamil Nadu's continuing journey towards developing globally competitive skilled talent.
